Do mountain lions roam the Arkansas Ozarks?

Filed under: General Information, Outdoor — John Reddell @ 1:49 pm

According to those who have responded to that question in a recent Daily Times column, the answer is a forceful “yes!” But the Arkansas Fish and Game Commission begs to differ.

Blake Sasse, Arkansas Fish and Game Commission’s non-game mammal program leader in Little Rock, told the Daily Times this week, “There’s no evidence of a breeding population of mountain lions in Arkansas.”

Asked what kind of evidence the commission would have to have in order to officially admit there were mountain lions here, Sasse said, “The best evidence out there is a dead mountain lion. We get lots and lots of calls every year. I’ll tell you the truth, people misidentify things as mountain lions — housecats, dogs, coyotes, bobcats, otters — a lot of different things.”

He said the lion sightings would have to be confirmed by the Game and Fish Commission.

Sasse said in south Florida, where there is a confirmed breeding population, mountain lions are often hit by cars on the highway.

“If there’s an established population, there would be dead mountain lions showing up — getting shot or hit by cars,” he said.

He said because mountain lions are non-game animals, there is no hunting season for the big cats. “If they are a threat to your property, you can shoot it,” he said.

He said the F&G also issues “depredation permits” that allow people to kill an animal that is a threat.

“There’s no confirmed mountain lions in the southeast United States outside of south Florida,” he said. “There’s no real hard evidence of established populations.”

He said the Fish and Game Commission gets about 100 to 200 calls a year — which he calls “a conservative estimate” — from around the state reporting mountain lion sightings.

“It’s been over 30 years since the last time a mountain lion was shot in Arkansas,” he said. “It’s been a long time since a carcass has showed up in the wild. Theoretically, one can migrate a long way.”

Sasse admits that conditions are favorable for mountain lions in this area. “There are plenty of food resources for mountain lions in Arkansas,” he said. “The nearest population is in south Texas.”

Although he dismisses the idea of a breeding population of mountain lions in Arkansas, the AFGC official admitted, “It doesn’t mean that there’s not an occasional sighting.”

Sasse said he wouldn’t be surprised if there were “an escaped pet” out there.

Daily Times readers have voiced their own opinions about whether or not mountain lions are out there in the hills.

‘They’re out there.’

George Steinmetz of Tar Kiln Road, Bergman: “I saw the prints in my garden last summer, about four, four-and-a-half inches across. There were two sets of prints, so it must have been a pair.”

Steinmetz also said he caught a glimpse of one of the big cats on the edge of the woods near his home. “I thought it was a bobcat until I saw the long tail. They’re out there.”

DOT picks Great Lakes for Boone County Airport carrier

Filed under: General Information — John Reddell @ 10:10 am

Boone County officials were informed Thursday afternoon that Great Lakes Airlines Ltd. Will be the next Essential Air Service carrier for Harrison, but local officials haven’t been told when that service will start.

The 24-month contract calls for 12 weekly one-stop round trips to Dallas and seven weekly nonstop or one-stop round trips to Kansas City. The contract lets Great Lakes determine if flights are one-stop or non-stop.

Other details require a beech 1900 (19-passenger seats) aircraft with annual compensation of $1,587,067 based on an annual completion factor of 98 percent.

Thursday’s U.S. Department of Transportation’s order offers Great Lakes an annual subsidy of $9,159,331 for providing Essential Air Service for airports at Grand Island, Neb., Joplin, Mo., and Hot Springs, El Dorado/Camden and Harrison in Arkansas.

The order remembers that on May 5 the Department of Transportation selected Hawaii Island Air to provide Essential Air Service for Harrison, Joplin, Hot Springs and Grand Island.

About 10 days later Air Midwest announced it would cease all operations on June 30, leaving those communities with no scheduled air service.

A month after Island Air was awarded the contract, the airline “notified us that would not be able to inaugurate service at the four communities where it had been selected,” the Department of Transportation’s order said.

“Island Air’s withdrawal exacerbates the emergency created by Air Midwest’s shutdown on June 30.”

The Department of Transportation’s order “encourages the communities and the carrier to continue to work together to optimize the service patterns under this carrier selection.

“Great Lakes is a well-established carrier and provides a significant amount of subsidized EAS throughout the country. Moreover, we find that the subsidy levels are reasonable for the service levels to be provided.”

Ride 4 Cash Event Review

Filed under: General Information — John Reddell @ 8:17 am

On June 27-28, 2008, the Harrison Convention & Visitors Bureau and Main Street Harrison held the Cookin’ on the Creek BBQ Championship and the Ozark Mountain Ride 4 Cash Motorcycle Event. While weather played a critical component in the lack of success for both events, but the Lake Harrison location was absolutely perfect. All the visitors to the events loved the lake location and spoke extremely favorable about our park and Minnie Harris Stage area. If anyone saw Lake Harrison Park after the Sunday storms of June 22nd, you wouldn’t have thought an event could have been held there. The city workers and Mayor Pat Moles did a tremendous job of cleaning up the park and getting it ready to receive guests from out of town. While their attention was getting the city back into working condition, they also realized how important it was to show our visitors a beautiful park setting. The visitors were impressed with the venue and more impressed after learning of the damage and cleanup efforts. Special thanks to James Hensley, John Phillips, Frank Gelinas, and especially Pat Moles for all their efforts. Without your hard work, we could not have put on the events of the past weekend. Our gratitude goes out to each and everyone one of our city, county and state workers.

I would also like to thank the many organizations and businesses that helped with the Ride 4 Cash Motorcycle Event. Without their assistance at the stop locations, the event could not have happened. The businesses and organizations that assisted were Extreme Sports of Harrison, Jerry Jackson Realty, Ozark Arts Council, Ozark Mountain Region Tourism Association, Western Sizzlin Restaurant, K-Life Ministries, Independent Living, Harrison Daily Times, The Cotter Chamber of Commerce, The Flippin Chamber of Commerce, Arvest Bank and Chris May with YouMayTravel.com. Their efforts are so appreciated especially since they sat in the rain on Saturday showing hospitality to the motorcyclists and making them feel welcome to the Ozarks. The day was dreary for all the bikers, but our volunteers did a fabulous job of making them feel welcome and special.

The volunteers that helped with the setup of the event and registration need a big slap on the back and extra kudos. Mike Magness, Mike Brown, Bob Richards and Kelley Linck did a fabulous job of setting up the event site and directing bikes to the appropriate areas. Barbara Brown, B.J. Marcil, Yadi Cook, Colleen Tomlinson, Melissa Kirkland, Becca Holt, Brooke Holt, and Emily Cook all made registration go off seamlessly and always had a smiling face for our guests. Lastly, the staff at the Harrison CVB, Kelly Holt and Tamsyn Simon. Your efforts, not only over the weekend, but for the past six months made the event organization go off smoothly and that effort positioned Harrison to be successful.

There is no way an event of this size can happen without a dedicated staff and fabulous volunteers who care about the success of Harrison and the image to our visitors. My thanks and gratitude goes out to each and every one of you that assisted on the event.

Ozark Mountain Studio Artist Tour

Filed under: General Information, Events — John Reddell @ 10:57 am

The Ozark Mountain Studio Artist Tour is pleased to announce the official launch of its
new website for the 2008 Tour, ozarkmountainartists.com. The annual studio tour is slated
for September 19-21, 2008.

The 2008 website features a gallery of artwork from 20 collaborating artists who make
up the tour. The website is a showcase of small artist galleries, biographies, examples
of works, and contact information. Our artists represent the entire range of artistic
expression including painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, jewelry makers, and
mixed media, etc.

Newton County is blessed with a large and vibrant arts community. Much like better known
destinations like Taos, the extraordinary natural assets of Newton County are a magnet to
artists seeking solitude and the natural environs to inspire their creative work. Once a year,
these artists open their studios and offer a glimpse into the lives of artists working at their craft.

This year the tour welcomes many new artists. We have experienced nearly 100% growth
in our second year as more have become involved. Our new website includes a quarterly
newsletter about the artists, and art happenings around the area. We encourage interested
persons to subscribe on line. We will not share our newsletter email list with anyone.

Newton County artists wishing to become involved with the tour please contact us as
soon as possible for more information. We can take a few more artists, but they must
contact us as soon as possible. Email webmaster@ozarkwebsolutions.com.

Visit our website, ozarkmountainartists.com and explore the examples of the outstanding
work by our participating artists. Mark your calendars for our self-directed tour, September
19-21, 2008. Visit our website often for up-to-date news on our artists and the fall tour.
