Harrison, the county seat, is the largest city in Boone County with a 2000 estimated population of 13,000 and estimated county population of 34,000.

What a location! Harrison is located in the northwest portion of Arkansas, 29 miles south of the Missouri border, in the middle of picturesque Ozark Vacation land situated on U.S. 62-412 and U.S. 65 highways. Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas is located 134 miles south.

The community is as dedicated to the preservation of our history for future generations as it is toward growing a vibrant future. An active Main Street program is at work and the downtown square has been awarded National Historic District status. It is a fine example of an old-fashioned town square. The beautiful courthouse, built in 1909, still proudly serves in that capacity today. Located in a picturesque park, it is the central anchor of the square.

The downtown shopping district boasts many historical buildings dating as far back as 1876. The shopping district remains fully occupied providing community members and visitors a variety of shopping, dining and recreational opportunities. For those looking for a day trip, Harrison is a short 20 minute drive from the Branson Landing .

Harrison's economy is strong and the unemployment is low thanks to the diverse segments of business that are anchored by a large manufacturing community. Wood products, medical services, manufacturing, telecommunications, trucking, electronics, warehousing and tourism all play a large part in Harrison's success.

If you're looking for unspoiled scenic beauty, you can find it in every direction from Harrison. Just 15 minutes to the south and southwest are the Boston Mountains of the Ozark region. Only an hour and a half to the south of Harrison is the Ozark Folk Center at Mountain View plus the Jewel of the U.S. Forest Service, Blanchard Springs Caverns. The Folk Center features seasoned craftspeople demonstrating Arkansas pioneer skills. The Caverns, managed by the Forest Service, may be toured.

Several scenic drives wind through the Boston Mountains, including Arkansas Highway 7, which is designated as one of the 10 most scenic drives in the United States, and is the Arkansas's first National Scenic Byway. Drives in other directions offer outstanding scenery as well, along with pure, fresh air and views of each season's finery.

Canoeing, fishing and other water activities abound at the Buffalo National River , 15 minutes south; the White River, 50 minutes east for trout fishing ; Bull Shoals Lake, 25 minutes north; Table Rock Lake, 25 minutes north, offer water skiing and fishing. Within a half hour drive north from Harrison is booming Branson, Missouri and Victorian Eureka Springs is located an hour to the west.

Climate

The Climate is moderate with four distinct seasons and favors outdoor activities. Each season is special; from flowering springtime, through summer fun and colorful autumn to exciting winter which offers both sunshine and snowfall. The average winter temperature is 45 degrees, and the average summer temperature is 92 degrees. Precipitation is usually well distributed throughout the year. One or more snowfalls occur each winter, but the snow cover usually only remains for a few days. Elevation is 1,359 above sea level.

Recreation

Many activities are available in the area. Boone County has two country clubs with golf courses and a racquet club. Five major lakes (Bull Shoals, Norfork, Table Rock, Beaver and Taneycomo) and three major rivers (White River, Buffalo National River and Kings River) are close by for fishing, boating and other water sports.

City parks provide tennis and basketball courts, picnic facilities, a walking trail, fishing, playground equipment and a municipal pool. The Sports Complex hosts annual sports tournaments, and the large multipurpose Youth Center is a facility for groups and organizations of all types and ages.

Also in Harrison, birding enthusiasts and nature lovers can visit a remnant of tall grass prairie set aside as an Arkansas Natural Area, Baker Prairie. Five Arkansas plant species live in this natural area which is home to animal species of special concern. Baker Prairie is growing in popularity as a bird sanctuary.

Clubs and Organizations

There are many diverse civic, service and social clubs and organizations available in the area. Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Business and Professional Women, Junior Auxiliary, Newcomers, League of Women Voters, Senior, RSVP and Garden Clubs are available as well as Veteran and Fraternal Organizations.

The Ozark Arts Council is a non-profit organization to promote and encourage the arts in Harrison. The O.A.C. is made up seven arts-related organizations: The Buffalo River Concert Association, The Harrison Art League, The North Central Arkansas College Pioneer Players, The Theatre Company, The Twentieth Century Club and the Woman's Book Club.

The Lyric Theater , on the Harrison downtown square, is owned by the O.A.C. and has been renovated for live performances. Plays, concerts, youth events and community activities take place in the theater. Year-round schedules of weekly events are planned.

Economy

The economy in Harrison is strong and unemployment is low. The real estate market is vibrant! Low real estate taxes attract many people to Harrison and the cost and availability of nice homes and land is abundant. A lovely area just waiting for you.

There is an excellent children's collection, a large print collection, genealogy collection, small forms collection, Internet access computers, meetings and program facilities. Friends of the Library are active in supporting and helping keep the library updated. The library is located at 221 West Stephenson.

Excellent health care from North Arkansas Regional Medical Center is available. A fully certified medical facility provides a wide range of services. There is a 24-hour emergency service with physician, staff ambulances with ambulance sub stations located in surrounding communities.
